The Great Chasm

Here at the edge of heaven one can see out into the vast expanse of space separating heaven and hell.  Dangling precariously between the two extremes is the place we call Earth.  It is on Earth where the decision is made to live in the pleasures of heaven or the tortures of hell.  It is there where a glimpse of both heaven and hell are portrayed in the lives of people every day.  Some days are good, like graduating, or having a first child, and some days are bad, like being diagnosed with cancer, or having a car wreck.  These extreme life events on Earth are not worth mentioning in light of the infinite blessings of heaven or compared with the eternal pains of hell.  From here, it seems, the world spins rapidly while people go to and fro, working then sleeping, working then sleeping, then going on to the "afterlife" before they know what has happened.

At the other side of this vast expanse, past the limbo of Earth, the stench of hell rises up and the moaning of countless souls cloud the senses.  The pale light of smoldering coals is just enough to see the shadows of the condemned weeping in their inexpressible agony.  Some look toward heaven begging for a moment of relief, knowing it is too late, others curse the name of God, and still others bargain in vain for a second chance to warn those still on Earth.
